Strépy-Thieu boat lift great piece of engineering Aug 20, 2017
It's the largest boat lift in the world, With a height difference of 73.15 metres (240.0 ft) between the upstream and downstream. It was built to replace a system of two locks and four 16-metre lifts dating from 1888 to 1919, and was finished in 2002. The four older lifts are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and are situated near the big lift. I only stopped at the big lift for a little, not knowing there are tours on the site and a ride through the lift itself, I plan to come back and do the whole thing. But even just looking from the outside its pretty impressive!

Update 2017: and again didn't do the tour, but took some time to visit 3 of the four old lifts (Canal du Centre Historique) and grabbed a flyer with prizes: Strépy-Thieu boat lift, ride up including a visit to the machine room: €10,50 (adults)
