Story Overview

Whether or not there ever was an actual town called Story is the subject of a sometimes heated debate in Brown County, Indiana. Settlement of the area appears to have begun in 1851 when Dr. George Story was given a land grant here. Story grew quickly but suffered a steep decline during the Great Depression. The county lost half its population in the 1930s and 1940s. The towns fate was sealed when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flooded the area in 1960. This created Lake Monroe the second largest lake in the state, eliminated the town of Elkinsville, and cut the main road between Story and Bloomington. Because of its isolation and the economic difficulties of the town over the last century, Story looks much as it did in the early 1900s.
