Stingray Café New Bern Reviews
Bottom Feeder Dec 19, 2015
Great location, cheerful service and fresh seafood. That pretty much sums up good points around Stingray Café and it is downhill from there. Sitting next door to Tryon Palace and the North Carolina History Center, the restaurant lies in the perfect spot to reel in tourists. While there are plenty of restaurants in nearby blocks, Stingray seemed to be landing a nice catch when I stopped in for lunch.
I scanned their specials board on the sidewalk and though it seemed pricey, a nice selection of fish and a quick Yelp on my phone revealed positive reviews claiming it was “where the locals eat”. My experience was certainly okay, but mildly disappointing. The interior is worn and décor very kitschy, the wait staff adorned in street clothes (and not overly tidy). I believe these factors create the illusion of a ‘local’ hangout. Rest assured there was nary a ‘New Berner’ seated while I ate, and the overpriced fare probably earns scant repeat business.
My starter was a bowl of oyster stew featuring a hearty serving of meat which was quite fresh. Despite the abundance, however, the broth was disappointing in both flavor and consistency. A lot of the entrees were fried, so I opted for a shrimp salad. Again, no complaints over quantity and freshness, but that seemed to be the limit to good news. Really would take nothing more than a bit of cooking skill to make their offerings wonderful and worth the price.
Service was similar. Quite friendly, but not polished nor very good. Do not want to rag on the Stingray too much because it was not an awful experience. Guess I had expectations raised due to menu prices. Even these were not outrageous, but at the end of the day it drove buyer’s remorse.
