Daytrip to Klosterneuburg Oct 16, 2017
Klosterneuburg is a easy daytrip from Vienna. Margrave Leopold III of Babenberg did build his residence in the upper town of Klosterneuburg (then Nivviburc/Neuenburg) in 1113. The Habsburg Albrecht I built in 1288 a new castle as his residence. The fortifications of the upper town withstood also the siege by the Ottomans.

The Klosterneuburg Monastery was founded in 1114 by Leopold III. In 1730 Emperor Charles VI started to rebuild the Klosterneuburg monastery complex modelled on the Escorial. After his death in 1740 only 2 wings where finished. In 1836 construstion resumed by architect Joseph Kornhäusel and 2 more wings with 2 domes where finished, the main dome with the imperial crown on top, and the smaller dome the archducal crown.

The abbey church was remodeled in the Baroque style in the 17. century and in the 19. century the neo-Gothic twin steeples were erected.

There is also a museum of modern art, the Essl Museum, Essl was a large building materials store now bankrupt, the museum closed in 2016, bought by the Albertina. Hopefully it will reopen.

Entrance fee for the monastery is € 17.

Opening times:

Nov.,16. to April, 30. daily 10 am to 5 pm

May, 1. to Nov., 15. daily 9 am to 18 pm

Religious jewel on the outskirts of Vienna Jul 03, 2008
The Klosterneuburg Monastery is a great monastical complex, situated to the East of Vienna. It offers great scenery, and magnificent architecture, of different styles, combined into what is, in effect, a good blend of religion, art, architecture and gastronomy. They offer some interesting religious-theme programs, and permanently have art exhibitions.

Personal note: my father, the well-known sculptor Aurel Vlad, has a personal art show there between 3rd July and 18th November 2008
