Informative and fun cruise. Sep 18, 2009
This recently added huge three level sternwheeler, the Discovery III takes you on about a ten mile cruise down the Chena River to where it meets the Tanana River and returns. During this informative and fun trip you will watch a floatplane take off and land in the river next to you, meet sled dogs in training and watch was they eagerly learn their trade, then a reindeer farms puts out some branches of their favorite meal and lets a small group out to rivers edge to eat. Next, you get to see how the native Athabascan Indians catch salmon from the river. After cruising on down to the meeting of the Tanana River the sternwheeler spins around and heads back upstream. Back at the reconstructed Chena Indian Village, the native Indians show you around their village with great personalized tour. You get to see special clothing, how they built their permanent and temporary shelters, how they used the hides and pelts of the animals they found. This is about a 3 and a half to four hour tour and they even offer free coffee and donuts while onboard and have other items at a nominal fee.
