The Stern Grove Festival is a free festival in San Francisco that starts in mid-June and ends in mid-August. The concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 2pm a wonderful outdoor ampitheater called Sigmund Stern Grove.

The theater is set amongst eucalyptus and redwood trees which provide a beautiful backdrop for the performances. The festival features a broad range of performers, from classical to world to hip hop and everything in between. This season's scheduled performers are posted on the website:

You should be sure to get there early, especially for the more popular artists, because they only let a limited amount of people into the festival. Last year's closing show with Ozomatli was jam-packed and filled to capacity way before it actually started. If you get there after they close the gate, you can go around the back and make yourself a spot in between the trees on the steep hill behind the theater seating. It's nice, but very far away from the stage and it can be hard to stay on the hill with out sliding down!

Avoid driving to the festival, it's very hard to find parking in the area. It can be easily accessed by public transportation. For directions, check the website or
