If you want to feel that you are back in the last century, and experience a truly great day out in Cape Town, then you should go for a Day Trip on this authentic old Steam Train.
Atlantic Rail in Cape Town, offers day trips leaving from C.T. on a regular basis on Sundays, leaving C.T. station at 10.30 for Simonstown, and back from there at 15h00.
We went on the first trip when they launched this service, a few months ago, and we had a wonderful day out. There is a loundge car, with full cash bar service, and you can buy some snacks on the train, or take your own picnic basket. Needless to say, we made full use of the cash bar!
We decided to get off at Kalk Bay, as this is such a lovely old Fishing harbour en-route, with beautiful little shops and restaurants. We walked to the harbour, to see what the locals had caught for the day. There are some lovely restaurants in the Harbour, but we decided to go back to Cape to Cuba, which is a very interesting Pub/Restaurant, on the beach next to the harbour.
By the time when we had to go to the station, to catch the train ride back to Cape Town, we all promised ourselves to make this a regular outing, at least every couple of months!
