My girlfriend and I took a long weekend in Amsterdam. With the exchange rate of sterling/ euro working against us, we searched around looking for reasonably priced accommodation and found Camping Zeeburg to be one of the cheapest ways of staying in Amsterdam.
As it was October we booked a cabin rather than risk freezing to death in a tent, although to be honest it wasn't that cold, and at least we had somewhere to store our clothing, and a bed was a welcome change from laying on the hard ground.
The cabins are quite small, with a table, two chairs and two bunk beds, but providing you're not planning on spending to much time in them they are adequate.
It can get quite noisy in the evening as the walls of the cabin are very thin, you get to hear almost every conversation going on in the block.
There is a restaurant on site that serves food all day/ evening, I would recommend the breakfast although we had a meal there one evening and it wasn't very good.
Camping Zeeburg is on the edge of the city and traveling by public transport can be a bit of a pain.
You will need to catch two buses (37 and 22) to get to Amsterdam Central and there is a little waiting to be done but it wasn't a great hardship.
If you don't mind a bit of noise in the evening and can put up with the traveling to and from the city centre then I'd recommend it, if not book into a hotel.

No luxury but you'll sleep well & cheap
Good food, friendly people (there was a problem with the room we first had , someone in the cleaning crew had some troubles)
they gave us a bigger room within 10 min :) (6 beds for 4 people )
the bar was amazing (if you like modern interiour) , cheap drinks, nice music, and a lot of interesting people
