A lot of people who come to New York City of course want to see the Statue of Liberty. Many of those people want to see it up close, not just from the downtown tip of Manhattan at Battery Park.

There's of course the small ferry that takes you to Liberty Island, and lets you go TO the Statue. That costs money. I can't say how much because I haven't done it.

In my opinion, the way to see the Statue of Liberty is on the Staten Island Ferry. It's completely free, and while it doesn't stop at Liberty Island, it gets you very close to it. You can ride the ferry on the open-air deck or sit inside and look out the windows. It's a very nice, leisurely ride across the water to Staten Island, and then you can just take it right back to Manhattan. It's a great, FREE, easy way to see a great NYC landmark.

I´m not jaded, but sightseeing in New York was underwhelming. I caught the free ferry to Staten Island, which takes you past the Statue of Liberty (which you can see much better on all the postcards…New York was underwhelming.
