Star and Shamrock Washington Reviews
Cultures clash (nicely) at this H Street pub Aug 13, 2010
It seems like there is an unspoken rule that any bar that opens on H Street since its rebirth several years ago has to have some sort of theme that makes people as "wow, really?" The Star and Shamrock is certainly no exception.
One of the newer establishments to open up on a particularly hot block of H Street NE, as the name suggests, Star and Shamrock blends Jewish and Irish culture together to make one fine pub. It features a food menu that is decidedly Hebrew and a drink menu that brings out the best of both Jewish and Irish specialties. A classic combo here would be a rueben sandwich with a pint of Guinness. Or, try one of their half Guinness specialties, such as the Star and Shamrock (half Hebrew Genesis Ale); or the Snakebite (half Manger Cider).
The bartenders and servers are all very nice and ready to help you as you dive into this cultural combination that doesn't seem so odd after you leave. After all, both the Irish and the Jews have been delt some pretty poor hands through history, so there's more to share than one initially expects!
