St.Thomas mount Shrine Chennai Reviews
A religious break.. Jun 18, 2013
St.Thomas mount is a small mount accessible by road and is only a few minutes from the airport. The mountain can be seen in close range from flights landing into and leaving Chennai. The mount is associated with St.Thomas an apostle of Jesus Christ and it is believed that the apostle was martyred here.A shrine dedicated to the apostle is still in use and it reverses a sacred stone cross known as the bleeding cross on to which the apostle bled when killed. An orphanage is housed adjacent to the shrine. The ancient heritage shrine which stood before has given room to a modern shrine and is accessible by road transport to the top. Many prefer to climb the moderately easy climb up the concrete steps with sculptures of the stations of the cross on both sides of the steps. The shrine also has a large number of blessed relics of catholic saints and a nice collection of paintings of the twelve apostles of Jesus.Although known popularly as the St.Thomas mount the shrine is dedicated to Mary mother of the expecting mothers and quite a number of pregnant expecting mothers do visit to pray or give thanks.
Once on the hill though called a mount,a clear view of the once upon a time British army Barracks, airport and the city.Visitors who come here sit in a quite shade enjoying the breeze in the hot and humid climate attached to Chennai.
Chennai may have quite a few interesting attractions and this mount could be one place where one can take a while for a religious break.
