Victorian grandeur Mar 02, 2013
Built in the nineteenth century and in the Gothic revival style, this cathedral served as the Anglicans’ principal place of worship in Kolkata (for officials and clerks of the Empire, most likely). The cathedral is a wonderful piece of England in India; this is reflected through the stained glass windows, the layout of the garden and just the general feel of the interior. It was rather poignant to see the plaques which commemorated the dead Victorians – a wonderful insight into social history. I really liked the fairly simple but tasteful decoration, and it was nice to see a few worshippers here too. If you have seen the Victoria memorial, and have some minutes to spare, a quick visit here is not a bad idea!
