Famous submerged tower Aug 10, 2008
Today’s the most famous local landmark which made the town known for tourists, is the famous bell tower (1800) of the St. Nicholas Cathedral of the former monastery. It is the only remnant of the monastery which luckily avoided demolition. It surrealistically rises out of the water of the Uglich reservoir right in the middle of the fairway at the distance of approx. 200 m off the bank on the small island - the foundation of the tower was reinforced with filled-up soil. Local residents will happily offer you a motorboat ride to the island and around the tower (in fact, they offer their services to every tourist on the bank's viewpoint), if the weather is good enough.
