York St Mary’s is a medieval church that was deconsecrated in 1958 and in 2004 it opened as a contemporary art venue. The church itself dates from the 11th century, although the current building is mostly 15th century with a dedication stone bearing an inscription saying it was built by ‘Efrard & Grim & Aese’. The only remaining parts of the original Saxon church are limited to stonework in the body of the church close to the chancel. There were modifications carried out although a proper restoration took place between 1867 and 1870 when the east window was replaced, the church re-roofed and the east end parapet was renewed. The church has the tallest steeple in York at 47 metres high. In 1958 the church was declared redundant in 1958 and converted for secular use. It now houses exhibitions operated under the York Museums Trust.

The church is Grade I listed (June 1954).

The nearest Car Park (Castle) is just a three minute walk away (YO1 9SA) and has 318 spaces.
