St Mark´s Church Belgrade Reviews
A Serbian-Byzantine Church Jun 05, 2013
St Mark´s Church (Crkva Svetog Marka) is located in the Tašmajdan Park, in the centre of Belgrade, one block from the Parliament of Serbia. The Tašmajdan Park is constructed on top of an old quarry. There is a cave under the park and as far as I was able to find out, it is open to visitors.
St Mark´s Church was finished in 1948 and is based on the design of the Gračanica Monastery near Priština in Kosovo. It consists of five domes with a bell tower above the entrance. The external walls are in two colours of natural materials in the Serbian-Byzantine architectural style. The interior is still not fully completed. This is easy to see, as it looks like they ran out of money when they had finished decorating only half up the walls. Appropriate lighting, acoustics, heating and ventilation are still not finished.
St. Mark's Church is 62 meters long and 45 meters wide, and the height of the main cupola to the base of the cross is 60 meters. The altar table is in marble with smaller mosaics on the front side.
On the right side, after entering the church, is the marble tomb of Tzar Stefan Urosh IV Dushan Nemanjic, known as Dushan the Powerful († 1354), where his holy relics rest. The tomb was designed by Dr. Dragomir Tadić. Opposite, to the left of the entrance, is the tomb of Patriarch German (Đoić, † 1991), which has been built in the same style and of the same material. Below the narthex of the church is the crypt, which contains the tombs of bishops and royals.
The previous church, which was in the same spot, caught fire during the German bombing on Palm Sunday, April 13, 1941. The damage was so extensive that its remains were completely removed in 1942.
Don´t miss the small Russian Orthodox church next to St. Mark's. It was erected by Russian refugees, who fled the October revolution. Photography is not permitted inside the church.
