2nd Best Mardi Gras in the U.S. Mar 08, 2011
Instead of making the trip down to New Orleans my friends and I decided to go to St Louis Mardi Gras for the second year in a row. It started with a parade of floats from the St Louis Cardinals Mascot to a bunch of guys dressed like Marilyn Monroe. Every float had people throwing beads and other random things to the crowd. They had many of the Roads closed off including Soulard where all the alcohol was flowing. They had set up a Landshark Beer stage for live music as well as many traditional Mardi Gras foods like the delcicious Gyros! Many of the buildings along the streets opened their doors for people to hang out. One place I ended up was a Croatian Church that charged a five dollar cover where you could play beer pong and flip cup. Nothing like a holiday to start drinking at 8 am with some nice cold beers and hotty toddies to get you warmed up for Mardi Gras!

2nd best in the country....but too cold for me Apr 20, 2011
I've been down to Soulard 3 times for this event and I refuse to go again. It is always very cold, even when Mardi Gras falls late in the year. Beers are expensive and every bar has a $10-20 cover, which is not typical of St. Louis or Soulard for that matter. People are obnixious by 8am and the lines for the bathrooms are easily over 30 minutes. Unless you know someone that has a house down there (where you can easily use the bathroom and stay warm), I would recommend staying as far away from Soulard as possible this day.

Many people don't realize that St. Louis, MO has one of the BEST Mardi Gras in the world. Of course, it doesn't compare to New Orleans or Carnaval in Rio, but it is definitely on the radar. Born and raised in St. Louis, and spending much of my college years living in Soulard, I've spent my fair share of time at this lovely festival. I was also a Jagermeister girl for 3 years, and had the good fortune of working this event every year to promote the liquor (well, lets be honest...I was mainly getting hit on by drunk men but it was all in the name of work of course!).

The festivities takes place the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, usually sometime in early February. It is held in the Soulard area of St. Louis, a historic French Catholic nieghborhood near downtown. Saturday morning there is a huge parade at around 10 or 11 am, followed by drinking in the streets, flesh-for-beads, massive alchohol sponsored tents with dancing, many, many bars, clubs and restaurants, street vendors, and just a big party in the streets. It's definitely a good time, but I have to say if you don't like crowds, you might want to just stay home and watch all the action on the 10 O'clock news!!

So if you don't have the time to travel to Rio this year for Carnaval, try a road trip to St. Louis instead!! The hotels are cheap, there is a great zoo and city museum (review to come soon), and Anheiser-Busch is headquarter within walking distance of Soulard!!! With so much to do and see, St. Louis is really under-rated in my opinion. But, hey, maybe this review isn't even worth 2 cents so what do I know?!?!
