St. Louis Cemetary #1 New Orleans Reviews
Historic Cemetary Apr 23, 2011
Originally founded in 1789, St. Louis Cemetary #1 is the oldest in New Orleans.
It's a very old cemetary by North American standards, with above-ground tombs and crypts of differing sizes, and are in all varying degrees of (dis)repair. Some are very large, ornate and well kept while others have been neglected, assaulted by the elements and are not much more than unmarked rubble piles now. Given the vandalized "XXX" markings and seeming offerings of alcohol bottles, bobbles and beads, there seems to be some sort of voodoo connection to some specific tombs...Whether it's real or not is up to the imagination of the visitor, I guess.
Movies have been shot here over the years, including the "acid trip" sequences from the classic "Easy Rider". Tours are available, but we just wandered about at our own pace and spent maybe 45 minutes just reading epitaphs and checking names and dates. It's very quiet and peaceful feeling...and maybe even a little spooky. It IS a cemetary afterall.
It's easily within walking distance of the French Quarter. If you have about an hour to spend, it's worth checking out.
