St Just in Roseland Reviews
Stunningly beautiful Nov 11, 2010
St Just in Roseland must not be confused with St Just in Penwith, which is further west. I think there is actually a third St Just in Cornwall but I have no idea where. The Roseland and Penwith ones could scarcely be more different, except that each has an interesting church. I shall write a review of the Penwith one. So for now we are in Roseland.
Roseland is a peninsula to the east side of the massive inlet called the Carrick Roads and the principal village is St Mawes.
St Just is a very small village with expensive cottages - not to my taste at all - but on a very small road lies its church. @On the road' is a poor description because the road is actually almost on the church! The path from the church gate is so steep that you look down onto the church tower.
The churchyard is kept in immaculate condition and has some semi-tropical plants as well as many normal English species. The present building dates to the 13th century, although there was a church here long before that.
Adjacent to the churchyard is St Just Creek, a tidal stretch of a small river flowing into the Carrick Roads. You will see that websites almost invariably show it at high tide and that's when it's most convetonally beautiful -and how! However birdwatchers at least may like to see it when the tide is out and mud abounds. i admit to liking both.
