Father Damien's Church May 13, 2008
St. Joseph's Church was built by Father Damien in 1876. Father Damien was a Catholic priest from Belgium. He is best known for his work at the Kalaupapa Leper colony established by King Kamehameha V. Father Damien ministed to, and cared for those at the colony suffering from leprosy. He also died of the disease.

His church, St. Joseph's Church, is the second oldest church on Molokai. A statue of Father Damien stands beside the old church and is often draped in leis in honor of "The Martyr of Molokai". The door is closed but usually unlocked. You are free to go inside and enjoy this rural church. It is very small and not ornate, but has a nice, quaint charm to it. If you have already visted Kalaupapa or are interested in doing so, I would recommend stopping at St. Joseph's. It is not a major site, but it is relevant to the life of Father Damien.

St. Joseph's Church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
