St. John's Church Richmond Reviews
The Revolutionary Church Jun 25, 2010
St. John's Episcopal Church is famous as the place where Patrick Henry delivered his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech at the Second Virginia Convention in March 1775. The Virginia Conventions met after Lord Dunmore dissolved the Colonial House of Burgesses in 1774. Patrick Henry gave the speech in support of raising a Virginia militia to oppose further action by British troops. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, among other figures, were in attendance.
St. John's today is very mindful of its history. A visitor center operates in the former brick schoolhouse. Tours of the church are offered every half hour. (There is an $8 charge for tours of the interior. The grounds and visitor center are open.) Reenactments of the Second Virginia Convention are presented on weekends.
Surrounding the church is the churchyard and cemetery. George Wythe, a Virginia signer of the Declaration of Independence, is buried here. (Thomas Jefferson studied law under George Wythe.) Also buried in the cemetery is Edgar Allen Poe's mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe. (She was an actress and died while appearing in Richmond. Edgar Allen Poe was taken in by a foster family.)
