A landmark set of towering spires! Jun 25, 2011
When the Central Pacific Railroad began building a depot in 1872 the handful of Catholic families in the area were served by St. Mary’s Church in Visalia, which was established in 1861. They met for services in the home of Russell H. Fleming, the town’s first postmaster, beginning in 1873.

By 1878 the town’s folk began to build the first church in the area. Several additions and changes have taken place and in 1902 the cornerstone was laid on the new building. The new Gothic Romanesque would seat 600. Many folks at that time objected to the new location, which was too far from the town center. First services were held in the new church on Easter Sunday 1903. To the present day this church is noted for its wonderful tall and beautiful silver spires that rise so far into the sky.
