The beauty of Wales encapsulated in this lovely treasure! Sep 09, 2015
Another one of those places you don't want to miss when visiting Cardiff. Whilst the promise is simple (yes, it's just another of those recreated museums), the experience is grand. And grander once I realised that a lot of the displays aren't simple recreations but were carefully transported from various parts of the country to be housed in this museum. It's not only almost too good to be true, but also exposes a side of Welsh culture one wouldn't normally find if one (like me) spent time visiting the coastal towns and the oft-visited British castles.

That said, the only three areas I'd warn you are:

1) This place needs time. Earmark at least 3-4 hours for the whole experience. I say "warn" because please don't think this is something that's just another attraction on the High Street. It's a 30 minute bus drive infact, from Cardiff.

2) It's quite pricey. Again, worth the price after the experience but if you're on a shoestring budget (ha! shoestring and Europe!), this is best avoided. Don't go in thinking you can nab a ticket at bargain price

3) The public transport is unreliable. It's operated by a private operator for the Cardiff City transport, and many days they cancel certain slots without notice. Locals can check the schedule online but for international tourists like me who don't have roaming data plans set up, we're stranded without any form of intimation.

I won't spend too much time going on about the history or the various attractions here - most of it is beautifully documented on the Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Fagans_National_History_Museum. That said, my favourite parts were the old town and the ironworkers' cottages.

This is definitely a must-see place, very relaxing, chill and even on crowded days seems so quiet and relaxing from the city hustle bustle. ENJOY!

Vikram.. Hope you have a good sense of humor.. Just checked the museum website and I was right. It does not charge an entry fee!

Thanks Helen. Again, pricey is a relative word! I wouldn't want the cost to deter anyone from visiting - that said, it's not as cheap as city attractions. Carpark is 1 thing, but I totally got screwed with the bus transport when I visited!

Vikram. Lovely to see your review of somewhere that I have written about myself. In fact, I think it is very much just you and I who have reviewed St Fagans! Very interested to hear that you say that it is pricy to visit, because it was a free attraction when I went there only about two years ago. Though the car parking was quite expensive!

St Fagans, an open air heritage museum, is Wales' most popular attraction.

Over forty original buildings from different historical periods have been re-erected in the 100-acre parkland, among them houses, a farm, a school, a chapel and a splendid Workmens' Institute.

St Fagans explores all aspects of how people in Wales have lived, worked and spent their leisure time. Visitors gain an insight into the rich heritage and culture of Wales; traditional crafts are demonstrated and the Welsh language can be heard in daily use amongst craftsmen and interpreters on site.

Throughout the year, St Fagans comes to life — literally — as traditional festivals, music and dance events are celebrated. When I visited in August the English civil war society was in residence, re-enacting 17th centurary life and the skirmish between royalist and parlimentarian factions.
