St Buryan's Church Reviews
A fine rood screen Nov 05, 2010
4 rather than 5 because I don't expect everybody to share my interest in church architecture (although I am not religious).
All the Church of England buildings in the far west of Cornwall have much in common. being built of granite and enjoying much the same ground plan. Yet practicaly all have interesting individual features.
St Briavel is believed to have been a king's daughter from Ireland. Cornwall has any number of saints who seem to be unnnoticed elsewhere.
The special feature of this church is its rood screen. Unfortunately in 1814 repairers thought fit to destroy it - apparently because it detracted from the preacher's voice. I see before me an injunction not to use angry or obscene remarks so I will not comment!
However considerable efforts have been made to restore much of the screen as the photos show.
