St. Augustine Lighthouse Mar 24, 2011
St. Augustine Lighthouse with its distinctive black-and-white swirl can be seen across the Matanzas River from downtown St. Augustine. The lighthouse is located on Anastasia Island at a spot where a lighthouse has existed since the mid-18th century. The present 165 foot (50m) tower was built in 1874. I learned that all lighthouses along the Eastern seaboard were given distinctive striping patterns so that mariners would know which one they were seeing from afar. St. Augustine Lighthouse remains in operation today as an aid to navigation, though the US Coast Guard turned its operation over to the Lighthouse Museum in 2002. The original glass Fresnel lens is in use.

Visitors can climb the spiral staircase up the tower and see an active lighthouse in operation. Museum displays in the former Keeper's House trace St. Augustine's maritime history. There are also nighttime ghost tours of the lighthouse.

Admission is $9.50. (Dark of the Moon ghost tours are $25.)

The St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum is definitely a great stop in Florida! The price runs around $8 per adult to climb a 219-step spiral metal staircase to the top of the beautiful landmark. Not only is it a great educational visit but the views from the top are well worth the climb. On top of that, this lighthouse has been featured more than once on the television show Ghosthunters (TAPS). It is highly haunted and offers great sunset tours.

The Lighthouse is amazing. It is near a little park. There are two beautiful buildings on the property. One houses a hall and one houses a giftshop. Wear your running shoes becuase it is 219 steps to the top. This is also know to be a haunted lighthouse. You can take tours to the top of the lighthouse on Friday and Saturday nights. There are also local Ghost tours to the lighthouse.

Florida's First Lighthouse - St Augustine Dec 08, 2000
We saw this lighthouse with the spiral stripes and the red top every time we crossed the St. Augustine inlet on the ICW.

In in the 1580s a wooden watchtower was established on Anastasia Island (inside the inlet). In 1673, construction began on the Castillo de San Marco and at the same time, a light tower was built to replace the watchtower. In 1823, a $5,000 government grant was established and the limestone tower was converted by contractor Elias Wallen into Florida's first lighthouse by 1824.

Paul Petz, who designed the Library of Congress, built a new lighthouse with better visibility for mariners with a 165-foot tower and a first-order Fresnel lens. The new lighthouse was completed in 1874.

In 1898, St. Augustine's lighthouse was used as a lookout tower in the Spanish-American War. The light keeper of St. Augustine's served as the lookout and had signal flags and a telephone line that ran to the customs house to send an alert if needed. Today the U.S. Coast Guard tends to this lighthouse, which is still an active guide to navigation.

It was one of the first lighthouses in America to open its doors to tourists and it is the Junior Service League of St. Augustine which uses the price of admission toward maintaining the lighthouse. It is surrounded by beautiful live oaks, which also make the tower one of the most difficult to photograph. The lighthouse rating people put this lighthouse in the top (platinum) group for lighthouse visiting.

At the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum you can:

*Climb to the top of the 165' tower. (219 steps)*See the working first order Fresnel lens. *Learn how the lightkeepers lived through living history activities and exhibits.*See and touch artifacts from shipwrecks lost in the treacherous St. Augustine inlet.

Admission to the tower museum is $5.50 for adults, $4.00 for seniors (55 and over) and $2.75 for children ages 7-11

.* Rates are subject to change.

My son and daughter-in-law recently climbed this lighthouse. We went to the visitor's center, but decided not to pay to go into the museum/lighthouse section since neither of us was inclined to actually climb the lighthouse.

Open daily from 9am to 6pm with extended summer and holiday hours
