Great island - typical Åland church. Sep 09, 2010
By and large the islands of Åland do not provide splendour of natural scenery, having very few contours. The principal attractions are either man-made or depend upon the flora and fauna. If there is an exception, it is the island of Kökar, where the cliffs are impressive. However even here the church of St Anne, technically on a separate island of Hamnö but only requiring a bridge crossing, enhances rather than detracts from the scenery.

Like many churches on these islands, St Anne's has a separate clock-tower and inside the church is a model of a sailing ship hanging.

Just beside the church are the ruins of a Franciscan monastery built in the 15th century. This now is covered by a rough structure to prevent further damage and there is an exhibition of photos and small artefacts around the walls.
