Day 8 Negombo
That morning we had an appointment with the Catamaran-Crew. We sailed to a shipwreck that was pretty far from the coast. It was a great trip because there was a lot of wind and the water was not that calm as it had been the first time! It was pretty cool! We sailed away from the coastline and it went so fast! That was just really nice! We saw a lot of fishing boats on the water that morning. Small ones with just one person on it fishing with a net, but also really big ones wich...

04 Dec 2007 Flight MJ201 Colombo-Bangkok
This is not my first flight with Mihin Lanka Airline. Mihin Lanka is a new Sri Lanka airline (nearly low cost?) It is a company own by the Government of Sri Lanka. Currently, I fly relatively short distance with home base in Colombo International Airport.
During the previous flight, they served some soft drink and sandwich, better than other low cost airline and currently it is the lowest cost for traveling between Colombo-Bangkok wh...

The tensed political situation in Sri Lanka is not very welcomming for tourist nor travellers..
We had to go. My husband had a 3 month contract and his firm had advised him that it's better that he comes without the spouse and they will not take any responsibility for my safety.
For some couples it's beneficial - they said. Maybe for some, but not for us. It's hard for us to be apart even few days and we don't enjoy life as much as we do together, it's simply not as much fu...

In April when the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere, Sri Lankans begin celebrating their New Year or Aluth Avurudhu (in Sinhala) This year it was on the 13th of April. Luckily after 9 years me and my two brothers were with my parents to celibrate this auspicious time. For the Sri Lankan new year begins at a time determined by astrological signs.Old year and the begining of the new year occur s...

It was a strange start to my birthday: waking up on a bench in the arrivals hall in Colombo airport, where we'd stopped to get around four hours' sleep before the first bus of the morning. The flight from Dhaka was with Thai airways via Bangkok, and so we'd got into Colombo in the early hours of the morning. We were pleased to find, on waking up, that our bags hadn't been stolen, and we headed off to find a bus into town.
There was a bus just leaving and we managed to squeeze on. In spite of...

Welcome to Sri Lanka.
We were met at the airport by a lovely little Sri Lankan man by the name of Upali. It was about 1am but he was there with a big grin and took us to a town on the west coast to the north of Columbo called Negumbo for out first nights accomodation.
The car ride to the hotel was only about 30mins, but we got a good taste of what was to come over the next ten days, Upali loves nature is a romantic at heart, what have we done?
Only one night in Negumbo. Up early in the mor...

One Night in Weligama
Above me was a cocoanut palm crowns dark silhouetteLike a
blackened starburst, with edges frayed
And rippling in the evening breeze,
Framed by the darkness of an angry monsoon sky,
Where distant clouds hurried toward the hills
Like iron towards a magnet.
Behind them stars were bright,
But their light, was interrupted by the movement of the clouds,
Betwixt them and me.
Closer was the lime green light of fi...

It is such a shame that the turmoil deters travellers from making a trip there. It is a beautiful country and one of those memorable holidays I've had. From Buddha statues, Old ruins, trekking, wild elephants, tea plantations..My personal favourite is Sigiriya Rock - Sigiriya is a rock that rises sheer out of the surrounding plains. Story goes it was a fortress developed by a prince known as Kassapa who killed his father and waged his wars against his brother from Sigiriya. The walk to the top...

We were staying in Galle Fort and didn't
have enough time to go all the way to Deniyaya for a rainforest trek - so we
were delighted to discover that there is rainforest really close to Galle.
Rainforest Rescue International organised the eco-tour and picked us up from
our accommodation in an air-conditioned van. We drove for about an hour to get
to the reserve. The cost included all the entrance fees and guide fees, so it
was no hassle to enter. We walked down a tree shadowed path into...

Many years of war has taken it's toll on this city. The central area ,the Fort, has been mostly deserted. Most off the buildings have bullit holes in them and many have been just left to decay. Many streets are blocked off with oil drums and armed police. As well as the army.
We hired a car and driver for 6 hours for about $25 from the Hilton hotel right in town. Best in the city. There is one old colonial hotel and they do not let you take pictures outside the windows.
