Spring City Overview

Spring City is a very pretty, friendly small town of about 1000 (up 5% since 2000) located just east of the intersection of U. S. Highway 89 and Utah Highway 117 in Sanpete County in Central Utah. Spring City is 6 miles south of Mount Pleasant. Spring City was established in 1852 by a group of settlers led by James Allred. Many of the original settlers were family members of Allred and the town was first called "Allred Settlement". In 1853 a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ward was established here and Rueben W. Allred was appointed the bishop. Like most settlements in the valley, Allred Settlement was abandoned in 1853 due to the ongoing conflicts with the Ute Indians including the Sanpitch Utes. In 1859, the town was established again as "Springtown". Many of the new settlers to the town were Scandinavian and particularly Danish. Because of these settlers, the northern part of Spring City became known as "Little Copenhagen" or "Little Denmark" in the 1860s. Some of the region is still referred to with these names today. Spring City was incorporated in 1870. Agriculture and livestock were two of the mainstays of the economy in the early years of Spring City. They are still important to the town today; but Spring City has a growing art community and is a popular destination for tourists. Spring City has a great collection of Mormon Pioneer Architecture. In 2010, Forbes Magazine listed Spring City as one of the prettiest towns in the United States, a designation I heartily agree with. As an interesting political side note, the current mayor of Spring City, Jack Monnett, is the only mayor in the country who is a member of the Constitution Party. There is one historic district and two individual locations in Spring City listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
