Sport in Perth May 02, 2011
The city of Perth, Western Australia is a very beautiful city and with its very temperate climate and wide open spaces the people of Westen Australia are a very active bunch of people.
Just about every sport you can think of is played here at one level or another. The major ones being Australian Rules Football, Cricket, Association Football, Rugby and Netball. However, in saying that it is not uncommon to drive past a park and see groups playing all kinds of sports or other pasttimes which are enjoyed outside including Lawn Bowls, Baseball, Basketball and various Watersports to name a few.
AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL
"Aussie Rules" as it is affectionately called is played from May until September. The AFL is the governing body in Australia and Perth has 2 clubs that compete in this League, the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers. Both clubs play their matches at Subiaco Oval. When you first see this game, it is quite a hard game to understand, but the best way to explain it to the uninitiated is that its a mix between rugby and association football. It is a very physical game and is played by some great athletes. There is also a 2nd division (WAFL) which is played by clubs which represent the various districts around Perth. An adult ticket to an AFL game is around $40 while a Adult ticket to a WAFL game is around the $15 mark. If you are in Perth and love your sport, get down to one of these matches.
Football in Australia has a long tradition in Australia then in 2003 the National league reformed to become the Australian A-league. The A-league has had some very well known players play for various clubs including Dwight Yorke (Man Utd), Robbie Fowler (Liv'pool), Romario (Brazil), Juninho (Brazil), John Aloisi (Osasuna) and Paul Agostino (1860 Munich). This league is played between October and May. Perth Glory Football Club are the only Perth based team in this league, but unfortuneately after some big successes in the "old" league, they are yet to repeat that success in the A-league. Perth Glory play at Perth Oval and their fans are known for being very loud and have some great songs. A ticket will cost you around $25 for an adult.
For all you Cricket fans a trip down to the WACA ground is a must, with the annual Perth test match and One day series as well as the local domestic competitions. Some of the greatest players in the world have come out of Perth including Dennis Lillee, Micheal Hussey, Justin Langer, Rodney Marsh and Damian Martyn. Big International matches sell out fast so be quick when tickets are released.
The Western Force are Perth's Rugby team, they play in the Super Rugby League which is played by teams from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The season runs from March until June. The Western Force share a stadium with Perth Glory at Perth Oval. They have had some great players over the last few years, but unfortunately have never been able to challenge for a trophy. Some notable names to play for the Force include, Nathan Sharpe, James O'Connor, Matt Giteau and Brendon Cannon.
There are plenty of other international sporting events in Perth on an annual basis including The Hopman Cup (Tennis) Avon Descent (White Water Kayaking) V8 Supercars (Motorracing) Margaret River Pro (Surfing) as well as plenty of other sporting/outdoors events.
