Unexpected gem Apr 29, 2011
Constructed in Romanesque grandeur, the cathedral in Spoleto has to be one of Umbria’s highlights. Although the cathedral has been around since at least the eleventh century, the majority of the interior was significantly improved during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The whole cathedral is a pleasure to visit, but key features include the Lippi paintings which grace the main altar, one of the two handwritten letters that still exist from Saint Francis of Assisi and the Chapel of Saint Leonardo. Entrance is free and photography is allowed. Definitely worth checking out if you are remotely near Spoleto.
