Spokane, the second largest city, is located on the eastern edge of the state and has a population somewhere near 200,000. Settled in 1872 and originally named Spokane Falls, it has been nicknamed “The Lilac City”. Its Motto is “Near Nature, Near Perfect.”
Spokane is more conservative compared to its neighbors on the coast, and it is much more reminiscent of the American Midwest than cities like Seattle or Tacoma. That being said, there is still a strong outdoor culture thriving in the area, and the city's food and nightlife have been improving, while keeping its identity uniquely Eastern Washington.
