Split Rock Creek State Park Ihlen Reviews
Hidden Oasis in the Prairie Apr 22, 2014
Split Rock Creek State Park is located 7 miles south of Pipestone, MN in the Southwest portion of Minnesota. It was created in 1938 when the Works Progress Administration built a dam to give people in the area a place for water recreation in this mostly dry area of the state.
I went camping with a friend in the middle of August before heading back to work. I must say that this park was a hidden gem. Split Rock Creek may not be the biggest or most well know State Park. It is in the shadow of more well known ones in area, but it has a lot to offer for those looking to escape the everyday hustle and bustle.
Activities that I did on my vacation were Kayaking (They have 3, 2 singles and 1 tandem), Hiking (The Hiking Club Trail is in INCREDIBLE shape), Stargazing (There are no lights in the area and made watching the Perseid Meteor Shower fantastic), and wildlife viewing. Since this body of water is the biggest in the area, you are able to see so many different kinds of birds and other animals.
The water itself was not the clearest, I am guessing since the water level was low and it wasn't flowing over the dam, that the water wasn't as clean as it normally is. Though, the swimming beach was looking very well maintained and offered a great place to relax at the end of each day!
The park staff is incredibly friendly and are always working on maintaining the grounds. They are very talkative and will help in anyway possible. The only gripe, was that the park office seemed to be closed most the the time we went to it. Other than that, it was fantastic.
If you are looking to get away from it all and listen to nature and experience the prairie this place is for you. I recommend it to anyone who is in the area, definitely worth checking out.
I know that the park says it is in Jasper, but since it is touching Ihlen, that is where I put it.
