An Original Mom and Pop Kind of Restaurant Mar 18, 2008
Located in the village of Carey not far from ny home in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, is a restaurant/bar called Splinters. The place reminds me of an original Mom and Pop Kind of restaurant/bar. There are three areas of Splinters.

First is the bar area. A new bar runs down the left side with booths on the right. This area has a real down home feel with lots of decorations to look at. There's a hammock hanging from the ceiling, plenty of beer signs to catch your eye, and other typical bar type signs all around. There's a TV tuned to some sports channel, and some mucis playing in the background.

Second is the dining area located through a couple doorways beside the bar. This room is full of booths and tables and chairs. There's a jukebox upfront, and plenty of space for larger groups. Our group of six sat in this room. The waitress promptly greeted us and delivered our drink order. The menu is very reasonably priced. Sandwiches range in the $2-$4 dollar range. There are dinners and specials. The special that night was a generous prime rib with scalloped potatoes, vegetables, and salad for $9.00! Our food arrived hot and tasty, and in short time!

The third room is a banquet room with accommodations for approximately 50-55 people. Located in the back, the room is set apart from the bar and dining room for privacy. There is plenty of space for a small meeting or reunion. It is also used for overflow on very busy nights.

The food is very good, and the service was prompt. What more could you ask for! If ever in Carey, Ohio, check out Splinters!

From the minute we walked in, I was impressed. I remember this building as being, well, for lack of a better term, a dark little townie bar. What a change!

#1 impressive point - The restaurant was SPOTLESSLY clean. No dust, no food on the floor, tables and menus were like new, bar was clean and shiny... impressive for a small town restaurant.

#2 impressive point - the staff was very friendly. By this, I mean they treated us like we were old friends coming in. We were greeted with a friendly hello upon coming into the restaurant, our server was not only friendly but helpful with our questions, and we were bid farewell and come back soon upon leaving.

#3 impressive point - menu selection. There is a good range of sandwich, salad, and dinner selections. It would take a while to try everything on the menu.

#4 impressive point - prices. Dan had a sandwich, chips, soup, and cold appetizer. I had cheeseburger with fries. We both had drinks. We tipped our waitress very well. We barely spent $20.

#5 impressive point - the food was great. The sandwich toppings were fresh. Dan's fish was lightly breaded, not overly fried. The beets and eggs were fresh. The chili soup was a little too mild for our liking, but had excellent flavor. Simply put, a very good meal.

I'll certainly be back! :)
