800 Ft Sandstone Monolith Considered Sacred by the ancients. Jun 10, 2011
Spider Rock is one of the more prominent sandstone rocks that comprise the ancient canyon de shay. The 800 ft. sandstone monolith is sacred to the Navajo. They believe that the taller of the two spires is the home of Spider Woman who lives at its very top. Spider Woman the Grandmother, the creator of the world in Native American belief systems. They tell how she made the stars in the sky, by taking a web she had spun, lacing it with dew, and throwing it into the sky, where the dew became the stars.
Spider Rock is the most photographed feature of Canyon de Chelly.
