Just an average hostel May 10, 2012
I booked Spicylaos after my great experience with Spicypai hostel and expected a lot from it. But I was a bit disappointed as it turned out to be just an average place. The dorms looked ok, the beds were fine but there were no doors to the rooms. And all the lockers were in the corridor. But the most annoying thing was that there were no sockets in the dorms so if you wanted to charge a phone, a camera or use a laptop you had to go to the corridor - not really convenient and you wouldn't want to leave your phone unattended. The bathrooms were okish but the toilets not really.. But at least there was a toilet paper.

There is a common area where people socialise but as it was just next to the room it was hard to fall asleep at night as it was too loud.

It takes 10mins to walk to the night market so not that bad but you can find a better place in the same price range closer to the centre.

Just awesome Mar 11, 2011
If you are looking for a place to meet people, Spicy Lao is the place to go -- otherwise, stay away..This hostel is located a little bit off downtown, not really far away, but the area is quite dark at night. The price for all beds is the same, so if you are traveling with a companion you can ask for a private room for the same price as a dorm bed. There is a common area where you can chat and relax with ur friends and also having a TV there to watch (and there are lots of cushions to sit on). They offer free internet access and wifi as well. You can play billiards or ping pong. The ticket to waterfall is sold very cheap here.don't miss it

one of my favorite hostels Jul 08, 2011
The owner (Phong) is a great guy. From his other hostel in Chiang Mai the group I was with booked the slow boat from there and rolled in to this hostel a few days later. It's a great place to meet people as the hostel runs daily activities. The hostel is away from downtown, personally I liked this as it's a great walk into town.

Not exactly the cleanist of places but if you are travelling solo it is much easier to meet people staying here. It is only 30,000 Kip per night as well so it is the cheapest place to stayin in town.

Best hostel in SE Asia Jun 02, 2009
This was the best hostel I stayed in in my entire trip. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The best thing about this hostel is that the people who run it know people in the Laos community. On our first night there we all went to a Laos housewarming party!!! The week after that the hostel was attending a laos wedding ceremony, its a great way to learn about the culture. They are also great at organising tours and buses to your next destination.
