Speights Brewery Dunedin Reviews
For the beer lovers! Aug 29, 2008
The brewery tour starts with a few facts about the beginning of the brewery workings. Then it is into a lift to the top of the building. It is a gravity fed brewery so by doing this, we wander slowly downstairs through the different proccesses.
Of course, to keep up with the times, every thing is computerised but apparently one day per year or maybe a week. Can't remember! They go back to the old "manual" way of working.
Because they have some staff members that have been there for years, they love it when these days happen. They even still have the old offices still set up.
Eventually you get back to the ground floor. The proccess is done so the next step is the tasting.
Every one goes into the Bar room. There is a discussion on tasting like wine tasting. However, one of the young ladies has already downed the first glass. :-)
After running through the different beers on tap, every one gets to help themselves.
This is where you find out who the beer drinkers are. Haha
After about a half hour of this the tour is over. We had gone on the last tour of the day and had also booked dinner in their pub as part of the package. We wandered down the road to the pub and had a very nice dinner which also included one of their beers each.
It was good value.
As we were walking out of the pub we saw the young lady who had downed the beer too quickly. She was with her boyfriend and of course they were drinking more beer. What we thought was funny was they told us that they had done the brewery tour the night before as well because they worked out that for what they paid for the tour, it was good value because of the amount that they could drink at the end of the tour plus they got a discount on any drinks that they bought at the pub.
Interestingly, they also said that the tour was slightly different the night before.
