Soviet Home Hostel Lviv Reviews
Soviet Home Hostel Apr 21, 2011
You so often see places promote themselves as having a perfect central location - and so often you are disappointed. But here at the Soviet Home Hostel they can truly claim to have a central location - they are not on the main square of the city - but they are in the first building in one of the streets leading down to the main street. Hence you only have to go out the door below and you will be right in the middle of everything which goes on in Lviv.
They actually got two locations around the city - but during the low season when I visited only the central location was open. As far as I could tell even the second location was fairly central probably less than ten minutes walk to the centre - but this isn’t really the perfect location like the one where I stayed.
The Soviet Home has decided to make the interior in a way so it reflects the old heroes of the Soviet Union. So there is lots of literature on the shelves in the living room. Of course it will be an advantage if you actually speak Russian and got virtually unlimited time if you want to read all the way through the 41 volumes in the collected works of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov better known as Lenin. Now what do you do if you come here to read your very favorite volume of the collected works and realize somebody else has just taken it and started reading? Well don’t worry naturally they got two copies of Lenins collected works so you just take the same volume from the other copy. Actually the competition for the books didn’t seem all that stiff during my stay - but you never know and it really would a shame if you couldn’t get the volume you really wanted to read up on during your stay.
The walls are decorated with old soviet memorabilia like huge paintings of Lenin - they got his books so of course they need a painting as well - and a huge flag with somebody which looks the memory of the exploits of a famous cosmonaut. There is also a map on which the Soviet Union is obviously still one country taking up a huge part of the world map. The walls could actually do with a bit of paint - but instead of painting the walls they have put up a nice frame around and original Soviet style spot and making it a part of their decoration - very environmentally friendly to save paint this way right.
There is a kitchen where they did have free coffee available during my stay there. The place wasn’t really busy while I stayed there but it was somewhat out of season. And the city was slowly preparing for the great event of the European championships when I stayed so during the championships the prices will most like skyrocket and the availability will be very limited.
