Southport is a small town (pop. roughly 2,500) along coastal North Carolina near the South Carolina border. Sitting at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, Southport's history mainly derives from its strategic position during the Civil War. When the nation was at war with itself, the Cape Fear River was the only place where foreign goods could be skirted past Union blockades to supply the Confederacy and river pilots risking passage received handsome profits for running upstream.
Today Southport has a well deserved reputation as a pleasant village to visit for a day. Close to Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, Southport offers a lot of interesting art and antique stores, supported by some quality dining establishments. The lack of historical sites or entertainment venues maintains the low profile, but Southport has frequently served as a back-drop for film and Television (TV series "Dawson's Creek" and "Spies", motion pictures "A Walk to Remember" and "Crimes of the Heart").
