Southport, North Carolina May 03, 2008
The family enjoyed a pleasant outing to a sweet little village along the southern coast of North Carolina today. Southport sits on the mouth of the Cape Fear River, where it empties into the Atlantic and has a long history. The first boats constructed by Europeans in America were built along these shores in the early 1500’s and Stede Bonnet, the ‘Gentlemen Pirate’, was captured nearby in the 1800’s.

Today there are only about 2,500 year-round residents, although the population bumps up in the summer months due to its charming, though backwater, location. We had easy access from our home in nearby Wilmington. Although it would have been a 45-mile road trip, we only had to head south about ten miles (from our neighborhood, known as ‘Monkey Junction’, lol) to catch the ferry from Fort Fisher. What a bargain – only $5 to transport the car and our family of three across Cape Fear in about forty minutes (would have taken longer and cost more with gas prices!).

We spent an afternoon strolling about the downtown, which is a lot larger than you would expect for such a small place. There are an abundance of neat little art shops, restaurants and a delightful waterfront area with plenty of chairs and swings to enjoy views of the watercraft plying the waters and glimpse two lighthouses on nearby islands. A recommended daytrip if you are in the area!
