Holiday Inn (Now known as the Southern Sun Maputo) Nov 11, 2009
The Holiday Inn (now known as the Southern Sun Maputo) was one of about 2 or 3 nicer hotels on the beach. We were here for one night, although we had planned on staying much longer. On our first day here several rooms had been broken into. Mine was one of them, and I had my iPod stolen. The next day, because everyone was so stressed about the robberies, we decided to move the whole group to the Polana Hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly. The pool was empty for repairs, although they said it would be finished in a few days.
The location was great; away from the downtown Maputo noise and traffic. The hotel itself is very luxurious although the rooms are smaller than most luxury hotels. But they were clean and well-maintained. The ocean view rooms are recommended as the other rooms face the busy street outside the hotel. The housekeeping is excellent, and the workout facilities are above average. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and found the food to be very good. Breakfast was okay, with a choice of cold buffet and freshly cooked eggs in the style of your choice, and wide variety of Portuguese-influenced baked goods . The bar in the lobby is very busy, and offers both drinks and light food if you need a snack. The hotel is located adjacent to several restaurants/bars on the beach, so you have other options for dinner if you wish. They had wireless internet in the rooms, but it wasn’t good. Reception gives you an unlimited supply of password-coded cards each valid for 2 hours of free access - when you can get a signal. The room signal was extremely weak. |
