South Manchester Reviews
South Dec 31, 2010
South is a nightclub tucked away near King Street, away from the main pub and club areas, in Manchester. I went there for New Year’s Eve, and am hoping to go back next time I can get a posse together.
The music policy was mostly older Indie music, and a bit of motown and things from time to time. Lots of Madchester stuff, lots of Stone Roses, and occasional newer tracks. The DJ was Clint Boon, who DJs on XFM but to me will
always be “that bloke from Inspiral Carpets.” That dates both me and the other people who were out that night – it’s a slightly older crowd than places like 5th Ave. From my point of view, that’s great. But it’s probably worth bearing in mind if you are young or if you hate older Indie. I’ve had a quick look on the internet, and most of the feedback says the same thing. People who loved it talked about the cool music, nice crowd and the absence of stuffy entrance policy, and the fact that you can dance without feeling like you’re in some sort of meat market. People who hated it hated it because the ticket price was too high (I didn’t think it was, but I’m not a student), the music was too old (what
do you mean, too old? It came out 15 years ago? But that can’t be right, because I was doing my GCSE exams… oh.) and the club was full of people in their 30s (please tell me that’s not old!).
The club itself is fun. It’s not huge, and I can imagine it being sweaty in summer, but there is a nice floor and a nice bar and a coat check. Drink prices seemed fine to me, at about the £3 for a spirit and mixer, but I think that might be expensive compared to other clubs. There are toilets, and miraculously, there was toilet paper all night. I can’t remember what the décor
looked like, which is as it should be in a club. But I had a great night dancing with my friends and loved nearly every song.
