South of the Border Motor Inn Hamer Reviews
South of the Border Motor Inn Mar 07, 2015
Located in the sprawling tacky tourist wasteland known as South of the Border, the Motor Inn has seen better days but surprisingly is not that bad of a place for an overnight stay. The complex sits just across the North Carolina border in Hamer, South Carolina along Interstate 95.
My room cost $69 and was serviceable enough with twin beds, television, microwave, safe, and coffee maker. The shower head was quite low which forced me to duck my head (I‘m 5‘11“ or 180 cm), but since I have no hair to wash this was more of an annoyance than a problem. A metal bar on the shower door to hold towels fell onto the floor with a loud clang that scared the heck out of me, but other than that the room was fine for a single night.
Each room is a separate unit with a carport in front to park your car, which made loading and unloading very convenient. Security patrols routinely cover the entire South of the Border complex including the hotel during the night. The traffic noise from 95 was a bit loud but I managed to sleep through it.
There are places to eat in South of the Border, but nothing fancy. Keep in mind this is a gargantuan tourist trap, so if you want to buy some firecrackers, visit the reptile house, play some video games and gobble hot dogs for dinner, this place is perfect. In other words there is plenty of entertainment for children if you need somewhere to stop on a long road trip along I-95.
