A place you can spend the entire afternoon by the water! Jun 10, 2010
The South Street Seaport is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. You can take a variety of trains to the Fulton Street stop and walk about 4 or 5 blocks east to the Seaport. (There are little shops and vendors along the way if you need sunglasses for $5 or other souvenirs)

On a variety of days, they have performances and free give aways. A small lemon slushy is $3, but when the weather is hot and humid (as NY sometimes gets), it's all worth it.

What's not worth it is eating outside at one of the many restaurants if you have kids or are trying to save funds. Just go inside and up to the 3rd floor where they have a food court full of options. They have seafood, Chinese and other Asian foods, as well as 2 bars and hotdogs, etc. Avoid the seafood restaurant on the far end, I think it's called "Simply Seafood"; my cousin ordered red snapper and thinks he got tilapia. I ordered whiting and although I'd say they were aiming for a more healthy coating, it didn't taste too great and it was a very small serving of fish. The fried shrimp or shrimp sandwich was good, but I'd avoid the place if I were you. Don't order a forzen margarita from the "Margarita Bar" either; it's the cheapest worst frozen margarita you will ever drink-take my warning and avoid disappointment.

If you are in the mood to spend a few bucks, outside is a very nice place to sit and eat and people watch. Look at the menu and walk around before deciding. On the NE corner, there is a sandy cafe sort of restaurant; so if you're wearing sneakers, you might want to avoid here.

From here, with good shoes, you can walk to Battery Park or to the World Trade Center area in under 10 minutes.

If you don't include the subway ticket here this place is free. Some of you might know this better if I mention Pier 17. You get a nice view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridge from here. There's a shopping area with food court, restaurants and old sail boats to check out. Plus you're right by the financial district. You can just sit by one of the restaurants and enjoy the view. There's musicians playing for spare change and they're doing a really good job. The atmosphere is relaxed. They have a nice Christmas tree and decorations up during holiday season.

I can recommend this place if you are tired of touristy overrun places like Times Square and Empire State building.
