South Padre Island is a town of under 3000 (up 20% since 2000) located between Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Southern Texas in Cameron County. It is not far from Mexico. The area was first occupied by pre-historic Indians and by other Indian tribes throughout the years. It was first settled in 1800 by Padre Jose Nicolas Balli for whom the island is named. The town of South Padre Island was incorporated in 1974 as a resort town and boasts a wide variety of water-related activities. South Padre Island has also gained a reputation as one of the finest Spring Break party spots in the country. Even when I visited (which was off-season) there were quite a few tanned, healthy young people of both genders around.
South Padre Island has a drive on beach near Browsville. Its been a long time since I been there so I cant rememmber what facilities are there.
