THE SONESTA IS NOT SAFE

i paid a lot of money to stay at a hotel full of thieves and scumbags. Here is my story: I came back to the hotel one night at around 2 in the morning and went down to the lobby to do some work on my computer. Keep in mind, this is a huge open space with security walking all around. Anyway, I fell asleep by accident with my arms wrapped around my computer. When I woke up a couple of hours later, the computer was gone. I went to the front desk very distraught and told them what happened. They told me they have security cameras all around the lobby and would check them the next morning. I went back in the morning and talked to the manager. He was NOT apologetic and very shady. He told me that the cameras were being "rewired that night" and so they have no footage of the event. When I finally found the chief of security at the hotel a few hours later he too did not seem to care. He told me that the guests are not allowed to sleep in the lobby. He also seemed surprised and confused when I mentioned the cameras being off. In fact, his first reaction was "no" then "hmm not sure what you're talking about," then he changed the topic. If people aren't allowed to sleep in the lobby (which makes sense, it was not my plan to fall asleep there), then why wouldn't the night workers wake me up and tell me that? If the cameras really weren't working, then why would the chief of security not know that? I was told I could drive to "town" if I wanted to file a police report and given shitty directions to philipsburg which, as it turns out, is a far away town an hour away from Sonesta (I do not think they actually expected me to make it there). The detective agreed that the cameras were probably on and that they were covering for someone, but I doubt anything will really get done about it, and I am positive my computer with all the work i had just did on it for grad school is gone forever. I was offered no discount on my room or any other sort of compensation. PLEASE do not give these people your money...or at least do not come here as a girl or with any girls you might care about. The only people on the whole island who were disrespectful or aggressive towards me and my friend were the guys behind that desk, even before the computer incident. DO NOT GO TO THE SONESTA HOTEL IN MAHO!
