Sonati Esteli Reviews
Sonati Hostel Apr 06, 2014
I arrived from Matagalpa to Esteli bus station with the local transport, collected my stuff and made my way towards the main road to figure out the transport to the hostel. It looks like taxi service is the largest employer in the town and little taxis are easy to catch and cheap to ride. It cost only 10-15 cordobas (which comes to 50 cents) to go with collectivo to the center of the town. If you have lots of stuff with you, just take empty cab and give the driver 20 cordoba…
Sonati Esteli hostel is few blocks from the center and cathedral and one block from the highway. Location is pretty good with easy transportation options because as soon as you get on the highway you can fetch almost any bus that is passing.
There is a small board with the name of the hostel on the corner of the fence, but it is not really visible. Entrance gate is usually locked and you’ll have to ring the bell in order to get in. There is someone working on the reception all day and during the night there is guy sleeping in the lobby so he will open it for you. Little issue with the bell is that it is a bit hidden and placed high on the wall.
One of the first things you will see when you get in the building is many art project pieces. Most of the walls have some art made from recycling materials on very creative level. There is lots of space in the hostel, large hall, and really cool and spacious garden. That garden has all things necessary for relaxation and good times. Perfect for meeting everyone that stays in the hostel. Sonati also features good kitchen which is very busy during the evening hours due to lack of places to eat at during the evening.
Wi-Fi is all around but they also have a desktop computer for people without equipment.
I was in the four bed dorm that was nice and clean with the bathroom that was joined with the room next to ours. Bathroom is big and has hot water and only thing is not to forget to close doors from both rooms so that you have some kind of privacy…
There are also bathrooms outside of the rooms. Hostel does have few lockers and you’ll need your own lock to secure it. People working in hostel speak English and they are very helpful with giving information about the town.
Other great thing about this place is that they have lots of activities organized for any kind of adventure. The area around Esteli is incredibly beautiful with lots of waterfalls, canyons, and other nature marvels. The only thing is that they are very pricey for Nicaragua and for backpackers hostel. But there is nothing to worry about. Being in this hostel you are probably used to all kinds of transportation and not tourist ways of enjoying surrounding. So see the offerings, maps and check the places that you like in the area and do exploring by yourself. I went walking to the closest waterfall and it was a great and long walk.
