Somphathai Guest House Vang Vieng Reviews
Somphathai Guest House Apr 07, 2013
Somphathai Guest House is just a huge green building made by idea that more rooms you have, more money you can earn. Unfortunately, the main attraction of Vang Vieng which was generally “idiots drinking until unconscious or dead” is not available in the same sense as before so it does not bring enough people to fill the expectations of the large guest houses. I haven’t been to this place before, but they told me about the ways things were going here and river bars that were totally out of the control. Unfortunately death toll of more than a two people per month was too high, so they fortunately decided that tubing and alcohol don’t go together. Tubing is still available and fun, but river bars are mostly closed and probably never gonna work again.
We got to the town via bus, to the station that is couple kilometers from the city. It looks like they purposely made station so that taxi drivers can earn some money too… Taxi dropped us on the main square from which we went asking about the prices and looking at the rooms. There are many warnings about people stilling stuff from rooms, so we were looking for place that has some kind of security or at least someone in the front all the time so that people don’t get in the building if they don’t belong there… After couple of hotels and guest houses we were tired so when we got into Somphathai my resistance was on very low level and I said yes to everything
Room that we got was basic, nice room with AC, fan, large bed, extra small bed, and ok bathroom. Bathroom did not have hot water but it was enjoyable to spray with cold and refreshing shower. Windows had metal bars and door was sturdy and with good lock. In general it is basic, good room, with everything you need, including WiFi and possible food if you ask the owners.
Vang Vieng area is really beautiful and picturesque, with nice hills all around and green fields covering the rest. Many caves in the area will make your stay exciting and interesting and if you are into climbing or hiking, this place will be the paradise for you. Town has lots of options for travel, tours and food. Restaurants and bars are on every corner, and they mostly have large TV-s that play one of three most popular series, Friends, South Park or Family Guy… If you can stand these shows, than you will enjoy the food which is really tasty, well made and well represents the great Laos cuisine.
Our guest house was 50000 kip, which is cheap and in line with other places we stayed in Laos. After walking around the town, I found many more places that are next to the river or cabanas that have great yards and that are perfect for meeting people. Accommodation here is very cheap because people are not coming and staying here like they used to in the past. I was talking to the locals and they told me that just couple years ago they had 800 people coming in town per day and now it is only 200 per day. Big change that does not require so much rooms that they have in town. Therefore bargain hard and enjoy your stay.
