Hello Solvang! Jan 09, 2009
What a charming town! The whole city replicates Denmark in California and the restaurants, stores and bakeries (yes, I said bakeries) are all in the Danish architectural style. I thought it was really great to see such colorful buildings. Some stores include: antiques, dolls, toys, leather, danish goods, artwork, chocolate factory and OF COURSE a shoe store-authentic to Denmark, no Manolos here. There were a few places to get bakery items and the minute you walk in you get hungry. We got homemade fudge and carmel apples from one store and fresh baked cookies from another. Thumbelina Needlework carries Danish and European embroidery supplies and lots of fabrics. Stopped in Nathalie Doll house where there are many porcelain dolls to choose from. One thing I almost forgot was how beautiful the landscape was. As we were admiring it we went over to a nearby golf course to admire the mountains. Funny enough my Grandma saw a bird and was really hoping to get a picture of it. I really don't know what type of bird it was, looked like a stork or something to me. Anyhow, here is this crazy old lady running around with her camera trying to get a shot of it. So I joined in on the fun and we ended up being 2 crazy girls trying to get a picture of a bird who clearly was camera shy. I however conquered the task haha! Well worth the effort to make my Grandma laugh. It was very nice to spend the day out and about in Solvang.

In the beautiful mts of the santa ynez valley lies the city of solvang, a Danish town hidden away in these beautiful mts of central calif. i had the chance to come here twice and explore and eat here. Solvang was founded in 1911 on 9,000 acres (36 km²) of formerly Spanish land by a group of Danish educators. The settlers of this city left for the west to escape midwestern winters.

The city is home to some bakeries, restaurants, and merchants offering a taste of Denmark in California. The architecture of many of the buildings follows traditional German style. There is a copy of the famous Little Mermaid statue from Copenhagen, as well as one featuring the bust of famed Danish fable writer Hans Christian Andersen. A replica of the Copenhagen observatory Rundetårn in the scale 1:3 was finished in 1991 and can be seen in the city centre.

Mission Santa Ines, one of the the 8 California missions that i have visited over the past 7 years, is both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark. It is located near the center of the town, at the junction of State Route 246 and Alisal Road. if you ever get the chance to drive thru the mts to this town, try and stay a night and visit for as long as you can as it is rich in history and fun to visit.

Solvang in Danish means "sunny fields".
over 500,000 people visit each year
