Solda's Family Restaurant Port Alberni Reviews
Italian food lost in translation Jan 31, 2016
N49°15.629' W124°49.056' Port Alberni lacks serious dinner options and after Clam Bucket, we settled for this local tradition since 1969. Expecting to visit an Italian restaurant in August 2015, the classic diner interior was a let down. However, our server, Vittoria, reassured us the restaurant had Italian roots.
We ordered as main dish seafood fettuccine, shrimp, mussels & scallops simmered in a creamy rose sauce. This sauce was excessively creamy and overshadowed every other aspect of the dish, like the shrimps. Solda’s: do not bury your food under a layer of heavy sauce. The other main dish was a pizza vegetarian with pesto, onion, tomato, pepper, spinach and mushroom. It contained too many ingredients, lacked flavour and was loaded with calories. Not delicious. Without request, Vittoria put the pizza in a takeaway box. We left it on the table.
In Solda's we experienced the North American translation of the Italian kitchen. A translation with more emphasis on quantity than quality. It made us sad and our thoughts went back to absolute culinary delights experienced in Milan and Rome.
