Solar63 Hostel Porto Alegre Reviews
Solar63 Hostel Aug 29, 2016
I did not have much expectations of Porto Alegre but Solar 63 came out to be a great hostel. I knew that it was a big city, big port, and that there must be something cool around here, therefore I decided to stay for couple of days and explore the area. I arrived on the bus station that is close to the city center, on the river bank, and it is both international and national station. There are many local buses that stop around the station but it is very hard to understand the city lines or even to find which buses stop at the bus stop. Issue is that most of the bus stations don’t have bus numbers that stop there and Portuguese is not my easiest language to communicate…
So, I took the cab to the hostel, which is located in a kind of “bohemian” area next to the big park. Hostel is in the quiet street, surrounded with few streets that are full of restaurants and stores. Two blocks away you can find huge store that has all kinds of food and drinks you need. My favorites were few restaurants that are serving all you can eat Brazilian grill and salad bar with some amazing sweets. Two blocks away there is also a place that serves some serious sandwiches that area AWESOME. Take the one with chicken hearts, really good.
So, the hostel is somewhere around middle of the block, large house remodeled into sleeping quarters. This place is incredibly clean and well organized. As soon as you get in you are at the reception where you get all info, key and towel. The bottom floor features living area and kitchen. Most of the places to sit are made of old pallets and nice soft cushions. They have large TV that usually runs some kind of sport (football at least 95% of the time). Kitchen is large and it has all things necessary for cooking and storing food. They also have coffee and tea at all the times. In the morning breakfast is served, simple but alright. This city has really good food, and I warmly recommend the Mercado Central. Fantastic choices of fish, meat and all kinds of produce.
Second floor has dormitories that are well organized, they have good lockers and doors are also locked all the time. They are running tight security because this city does not have a great record of safety. For main door you’ll have to be buzzed in and there is always someone at the reception. All edges of the building and small yard have barb wire. Anyway, that is precaution, and they know what they need, but I never seen or felt any issue.
There are some other rooms that you get in from the yard and also they have grilling area and extra bathrooms outside. Bathrooms and showers are very good. Especially the shower.
All staff that works in here was fantastic and more than pleasant. City is worth staying at least few days. I warmly recommend this place.
