Sol Y Mar Shams Suites Sharm El Sheikh Reviews
AFFORDABLE May 08, 2011
I've been a guest at shams suites hotel 3 times in a row now. A friend of mine stayed here last yr and after meeting up with them at the hotel and being allowed to go to their room, I decided to give staying here a go.
At first, I really didn't like it and complained every single day but I soon accepted it isn't the hotel I was use to staying at and got on with things.
It's definitely value for money which is one of the reasons I have stayed here more than once. With me, when I find somewhere that I like, I remain loyal.
The location isn't ideal. You're in the area of nabq and it's a long 25min + drive to naama bay by taxi. The cost of a taxi from the hotel to naama bay or old sharm can be as much as £50 l/e and taxis don't pass often so be careful not to be too picky if you choose to let one go because the driver has asked for way too much money.
About a quarter of a mile down the rd there's the sister hotel to shams suites called sol y mar. You can use their facilities which is probably why shams suites has a whole list of facilities they claim to have on offer at their hotel, but they don't.
Shams suites has 49-50 rooms. The rooms are on 2 levels.
There's a tiny swimming pool that isn't even deep enough for diving. There are sun loungers and tables beside them. In the evening, you're allowed to sit by the pool and they have shelters with lights so even when the sun has gone down, you can still enjoy the evening.
There's a tiny play area for children but it isn't supervised.
I stay here on a bed and breakfast basis and even then, I don't eat the breakfast as I don't like it. The drinks aren't free but the bar is always usually shut so you need to make sure you buy plenty of your own from a local super market or you're stuck. There's no room service either and only some rooms have kitchens.
Mc D's don't deliver in the evening anymore as the beduine people are apparently attacking delivery drivers and stealing their money, the food and the mopeds so make sure you've filled your belly before heading back to the hotel or you'll be stuck without any food till the morning unless you're prepared to go back outside for food.
There's a gorgeous chinese restaurant called peaking that I eat at every time I go to egypt. TGI Friday's, starbucks and an Italian restaurant are also in Nabq, just 5min by taxi down the rd. There's also a KFC, a place called onions that sells a variety of food, and who deliver, plus a few other places including the St Georges pub.
Rooms are cleaned everyday. The beds are comfortable enough.
The bathrooms are all the same size- SMALL. There's no bath for anyone who enjoys a nice soak every now and then. You have a small shower big enough for one person. The rooms are quite basic.
The staff are polite and friendly. They will help in anyway they can.
The list of facilities not on offer at shams suites hotel are as follows:
NO ROOM SERVICE, NO FITNESS ROOM, NO AIRPORT SHUTTLE, NO TENNIS COURTS, NO SAUNA, NO MINI BAR (BUT FRIDGE), NO BATH/HOT TUB AND NO WAKE UP SERVICE.
If you want peace and quiet, then shams suits is definitely for you. If you're a family or young and like all the noise, then this isn't the hotel for you. I like it here and have got use to it.
